With the heavy burden of national expectation (not to mention the watchful eyes of his mum, Judy) resting firmly on his shoulders, Andy Murray faces Nikolay Davydenko in today’s first round clash at Wimbledon.

It is not a particularly kind draw for the Scot, who also finds himself in same half of the draw as Rafa Nadal. Davydenko is former World No. 3 and has a reputation for spoiling the party.

That said, the Russian arrives on indifferent form - with a 12-12 win-loss record for the season so far - and he trails Murray 5-4 in head-to-head matches, the Scot having toppled Davydenko in straight sets the last time they met.

Elsewhere at the All England Club today, Jo Wilfried Tsonga comfortably beat former Winner and World Number. 1 Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets, while womens’ reigning champion Petra Kvitova also eased through her opening match.

British youngster Laura Robson lost to Francesca Schiavone, despite claiming the first set.
